A procession of Snowflakes

Book | 2026

The Losar festival, celebrated in the month of December, marks the New Year according to the tribal calendar observed in the village of Lippa. This three day event commences each day around noon at the temple of the Devtas. Proceedings begin with the sounding of the Ranasingha, a horn-like instrument used to signal the start of the congregation and summon the villagers. Attendance is compulsory, with at least one representative required from each household. Once assembled, the two Devtas emerge from their respective temples to dance, bless the villagers, and listen to their concerns, wishes, and resolutions for the coming year. The formal rituals transition into communal celebrations, as villagers dance alongside the Devtas well into the night. After nightfall, the Devtas return to their sanctuaries, while the villagers continue dancing within the temple premises until morning.

Handmade and handbound, this book is a collaborative creation from the community of Lippa Village. It features photographs of the festival, all captured with a point-and-shoot camera that was passed from person to person.
